Supports Hard to Remove

Medium to Fix

Support structures are difficult or impossible to remove without damaging the print.

What Does It Look Like?

Supports fused to model
Breaking model trying to remove supports
Support marks or damage on surface
Can't fit tools under supports

Common Causes

Insufficient support gap
Support density too high
No support interface layers
Temperature too high

Solutions (Try in Order)

Start with Priority 1 solutions. Make one change at a time and test between changes.

1
Increase Support Z-Distance

Larger gap makes removal easier

Z-gap: 0.2mm minimum (2 layer heights)
1
Enable Support Interface

Dense roof layer separates easier

Interface layers: 2-3 layers, lower density
2
Reduce Support Density

Less material = easier removal

Support density: 10-15%
2
Change Support Pattern

Some patterns break away easier

Try Lines or Lightning (not Grid)
3
Use Soluble Supports

Dissolves away completely

PVA or HIPS for dual extrusion printers
3
Lower Print Temperature

Reduces adhesion between support and model

Decrease by 5°C
Prevention Tips
  • Save working settings for each filament type
  • Perform regular printer maintenance
  • Keep filament dry and stored properly
  • Re-level bed before important prints
  • Start with manufacturer-recommended settings
