Layer Separation/Delamination

Medium to Fix

Printed layers don't stick together properly, causing the print to split apart along layer lines.

What Does It Look Like?

Layers visibly separated or cracked
Print splits apart easily along layers
Gaps visible between layer lines

Common Causes

Print temperature too low
Insufficient cooling between layers
Layer height too large
Dirty nozzle

Solutions (Try in Order)

Start with Priority 1 solutions. Make one change at a time and test between changes.

1
Increase Print Temperature

Higher temp improves layer bonding

Increase by 5-10°C (stay within filament range)
1
Reduce Cooling Fan Speed

Less cooling allows better layer fusion

Reduce fan to 50% or lower (especially for first 5-10 layers)
2
Decrease Layer Height

Thinner layers bond better

Try 0.2mm or 0.16mm instead of 0.28mm
2
Increase Extrusion Multiplier

More material creates better contact

Increase flow rate by 2-5%
3
Clean or Replace Nozzle

Clogs reduce material flow

Cold pull or nozzle replacement
Prevention Tips
  • Save working settings for each filament type
  • Perform regular printer maintenance
  • Keep filament dry and stored properly
  • Re-level bed before important prints
  • Start with manufacturer-recommended settings
