First Layer Not Sticking

Easy to Fix

The first layer doesn't adhere to the build plate, causing print failure.

What Does It Look Like?

Filament not sticking to bed
First layer peeling up
Nozzle dragging filament around
Print moving during printing

Common Causes

Bed not level
Nozzle too far from bed
Bed temperature too low
Dirty build surface

Solutions (Try in Order)

Start with Priority 1 solutions. Make one change at a time and test between changes.

1
Level Your Bed

Most common cause of adhesion issues

Paper test at all four corners and center
1
Adjust Z-Offset/Nozzle Height

Nozzle should slightly squish first layer

Lower nozzle by 0.05mm increments until slight squish
2
Increase Bed Temperature

Material sticks better to warm surface

PLA: 60°C, PETG: 80°C, ABS: 100°C
2
Clean Build Surface

Remove oils, dust, and residue

IPA (isopropyl alcohol) wipe or soap and water
2
Slow Down First Layer

Gives material time to adhere

First layer speed: 15-25mm/s
3
Use Adhesion Aids

Improve stickiness

Glue stick, hairspray, or BuildTak
Prevention Tips
  • Save working settings for each filament type
  • Perform regular printer maintenance
  • Keep filament dry and stored properly
  • Re-level bed before important prints
  • Start with manufacturer-recommended settings
